Fashion Photography

1. When is an image a Portrait? When is it a fashion photograph? Are the two the Same?

It is a Portrait when a picture is taken of a person expressing their personality and mood of the subject. Portraiture focuses on the face but a background or body can also be included.

It is a Fashion photograph when…… the image is more focused on the fashion like the clothing or make up instead of the person themselves as a lot of this is used for commercial fashion to promote their clothing or make-up line. 

2. To what degree should an image manipulated to go into a fashion magazine?

In the film the following manipulations occurs

How about manipulations to the photos before they are taken, models, Makeup, sets clothes

The make up on the girl before the photo was taken is acceptable because a lot of people wear make up but the Photo-shopping of the eyes and neck are totally unacceptable as its not like people can Photoshop themselves and walk around like it. Is not natural at all. And pictures like this can knock a girls confidence in what she looks like as she will feel ugly.

3. Is there a clash between the creative and commercial side of fashion Photography?

What clashes occur in the film between the creative and commercial

Who wins?
Commercial photography wins in the film as the person making the decisions about what goes in the magazine and what doesn't. She makes a lot of harsh decisions regarding the images for the magazine but I think she knows what she's doing. 
Do you agree? Why?
I understand why commercial wins over creative photography in the magazine industry because it is a lot more important with selling clothes/accessories instead of wanting to be creative which takes more time and you don't want to take to much attention away from what is being promoted like the clothing by putting whacky make up and having whacky hair unless that's part of the promotion too.
